New container gate complex
The new South Gate Container Complex enables NC Ports to meet the demand of increased container volume at the Port of Wilmington while continuing to improve on the best trucker turn-times on the East Coast. Improvements include increasing inbound lanes for truck traffic to seven, outbound lanes to six, additional lanes at Port Security and additional outbound Radiation Portal Monitoring (RPM) lanes. The simultaneous addition of a new Terminal Operating System (TOS) and Gate Operating System (GOS) will further enhance the efficiency of the Port of Wilmington’s container yard and container gate.
Container yard improvements
This expansion will double the Port of Wilmington’s annual throughput capacity to approximately 1.2 million TEU. It will also significantly increase truck lanes to maintain fast turnaround times.
Turning basin expansion
The recent expansion of the turning basin allows 14,000 TEU and larger ocean vessels to safely and efficiently turn around in the Wilmington Harbor. NC Ports is also working with its federal partners on necessary navigational harbor enhancements that will enable the Port of Wilmington to better accommodate deep-draft container vessels.
Berth renovation
The Port of Wilmington is now able to service two ultra-large container vessels simultaneously with its new, 2,600 contiguous feet of container berth space. That means more capacity, and quicker operations.
