Port of Morehead City Supports USMC earthquake relief operations
Three vessels to be loaded at Port
Morehead City, NC – Marines and sailors of the 22nd Marine Expeditionary out of Camp LeJeune began embarkation at the Port of Morehead City today of U.S. Navy Amphibious Ships for a deployment in support of relief operations in the country of Haiti.
“The Port of Morehead City is proud to support the U.S. Marine Corps’ work in our country’s disaster relief for Haiti,” said NC State Ports Authority CEO Thomas J. Eagar.
According to a 22MEU media advisory, the Marines are embarking on the multi-purpose amphibious assault ship USS Bataan, amphibious dock landing ship USS Fort McHenry and amphibious dock landing ship USS Carter Hall. The MEU is loading a variety of equipment to support humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations to include trucks, limited earth moving equipment and water purification systems.
The 22nd MEU consists of its Ground Combat Element, Battalion Landing Team, 3rd Battalion 2nd Marine Regiment; Aviation Combat Element, Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 461 (Reinforced); Logistics Combat Element, Combat Logistics Battalion 22; and its Command Element.
